We can transmute objects into meaning and meaning into objects by comparison of what is like the other ( meaning like matter ) and with this we can gain many things through direct comparison. Further they can be added progressively, Passion could be converted back into something other then a Ruby.
This is done simply by converting physical properties to likewise mental meanings to create novel forms of idealization.
It is useful for many works to have meaning, for example their is much meaning in this image, but one could interpret it as liked, because meaning is not an objective science, it is subjective and created by the individual as they work and live.
For this reason art is often interpreted in variation by the creator and the observer of it, but the resource of meaning is none the less a useful one
